Loop(WINNER, BEST FILMINUTE 2011)
Aritz Moreno
Spain

• The film reproduces itself on and on. The protagonist is dead and alive at the same, being both the victim and his very own clumsy murderer! (Jury)
• Great framing, camera movement, timing of editing, original photography, good casting and acting, and well written with its abstract underlying theme of dramatic action trapped in unescapable circularity. The loop: can't stop watching it over and over. A well balanced symphony of slowness, wait, mystery, and sudden drama - all in one minute. (However, not a good coffee commercial...) (Jury)
• I really enjoyed the cinematography of The Loop, and appreciated the subtleties in its direction. I found the story to be fresh and innovative and unabashed in its display. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, I appreciated the underlying messages in this film, and recognized its commentary in regards to time and routine. (Jury)
• too good..one of the best short I've ever seen.
• Very clever

Oblivion
(WINNER, PEOPLE’S CHOICE 2011)
Shariff Nasr
Netherlands

• With OBLIVION, we imagine a backstory far beyond the 60 seconds we are shown. Emma! (www.coolio.net)
• Shocking but very well done, depressing, fascinated look, beautifully filmed, a real number 1.
• One minute that makes you think for hours! PRO!
• Ai, especially for me as a human rights activist in countries far away, this is very confronting.
• Goed gedaan! Mijn stem heb je!

No Man's Land(Top Rated Film)
Dominic Chambers
Australia

• Very good Mirko and everyone involved. I didn't see the end coming... but he sure did!
• How good was his short?? I'm thoroughly impressed!!
• The cinematography is awesome. The use of adrs is genius.
• Very powerful!
• Too moved to watch it a second time. Superb piece of work.

Reverie(JURY COMMENDATION)
Jaro Minne
BELGIUM

• I loved how this silent movie, without any special effects, transported me into this litlle girl's fantasy world. The acting, the story and the editing are sublime. (Jury)
• In such a limited time it allows the audience to analyze the social background and psychological conditions in which the Lacanian plot evolves. The innocence of a child and her potential to love without prejudice and borders -even in a society where there is race and class discrimination- shines through this film. The dream of the little girl may be interpreted as the dream of a united humanity and the fact that it is interrupted by an adult indicates the loss of innocence as a human being grows up. (Jury)
• Clear cinematographic talent. The weaving of dream and wake is so skilfully done it might even escape the short-span attention of the one-minute public, yet how touching this silent moment in the imagination of a child. (Jury)
• REVERIE takes you on a journey. We travel so far away with the main character that we too are startled when we are suddenly brought back down to earth. (www.coolio.net)
• hmmmm A relief..:) Grt piece..

Oblivion(JURY COMMENDATION)
Shariff Nasr
NETHERLANDS

• This movie made me experience one of my deepest fears: being isolated and abandoned. I think this is the worst (but the best) portrait of a life's end. (Jury)
• Dutch actor Raymond Thiry's performance is as touching as it is harrowing, as the film's protagonist struggles to comprehend where he is and what is happening to him (Jury)
• Really well done, brief and to the point. Thank you. We have to look closely at having enough properly trained staff to care for patients who have special needs.
• Incredible acting and directing performances
• You feel this man's deep frustration in your bones. Seriously moving film.

Hamburgz (JURY COMMENDATION)
Jordan Schmelzer
USA

• The director managed to really compact action, emotion, tension, violence, comedy, a skilfully built narrative arc employing a photo-montage technique made famous in 1962 by Chris Marker with "La jetιe". This one-minuter has cool, impact and drive. (Jury)
• Hamburgz is a flawless example of stop motion photography done right. Brilliantly acted, the protagonist executes his role perfectly while the villains provide just the right amount of humor. The fact that all this drama is over a hamburger is a delightful addition to an aesthetically sound and well executed film. (Jury)
• This movie takes stop motion to another level. It even looks like there are special effects with the pauses of certain frames. Loved the rythmn.(Jury)
• Loved this, artfully done cool and funny. awesome
• Wacky and inspired!

No Man's Land(JURY COMMENDATION)
Dominic Chambers
AUSTRALIA

• This movie is so pure. With a single shot, a tight framing, and amazing acting, I was sucked in to this and the shock of the hanging literally hurt. (Jury)
• A life story and a powerful "performance" all wrapped tightly in 60 seconds. NO MAN'S LAND lives up to Filminute's credo to "Make Every Moment Count" (www.coolio.net) o So much has been done so well in this lean but powerful one-minute film ? http://j.mp/qaBubs #Australia (MUBI.com)
• Best actor award – hands down.
• Powerful dialogue, stunning performance, genius film

Dot In The Line(JURY COMMENDATION)
Basir Mahmood
PAKISTAN

• Excellent camera work, actor's direction, original, free-style editing, good sound work. This excellent rendition of "Achilles and the tortoise", Zenone's paradox about motion being illusion, is dramatic and surprising. It starts off as a serious chase scene, but when we discover who the chaser is - and we get the philosophical innuendos - then we are truly entertained while at the same time pushed to think, as a good one-minute audience should be. (Jury)
• cute. i expected some sort of criminal chase. well played
• :) a tale turned out to be real. good job.
• Fantastic acting, real action and much to think about. Nice one.
• Very innovative.........

ADVENTURE GIRLS
Jon Deitcher
CANADA

• A true, mad mash-up! Tarantino meets one-minute films. Absolutely original. (Jury)
• Incredibly production value and great sound design!
• Creepy! Can't believe this is from Canada. Awesome!

AFTER MATHEMATICS
Olivia Caciuleanu
ROMANIA

• How sensitive, intimate and intellectually subtle this short is. Poverty, frustration, communication and affection are well mixed with also a good choice in sound, good direction of photography and uptempo, original editing. (Jury)
• The long shots that set up and close this film are brilliant, bringing you into a story and giving you the space to consider the possibilities of this mysterious relationship. It left me thinking and wanting to know more.
• There were wildly different interpretations of this film http://j.mp/niYDSh by our selection committee — about what the nature of the "transaction" was between the 2 characters. A clue is shared by director Olivia Caciuleanu in the Production Notes post on MUBI. Thx @theauteursG (MUBI.com)

AT THE OPERA
Juan Pablo Zaramella
ARGENTINA

• It has an absurd sense of humour which is in perfect harmony with the plasticine characters with exaggerated eye balls. Since the opera heard in the film is Cavalleria Rusticana the silliness of the ending comes as a real surprise. (Jury)
• I found the At the Opera to be somewhat cathartic in its simple presentation. The idea of people going to an onion opera just for the sake of crying was not only very clever, but also quietly poignant. This film seamlessly presented an interesting juxtaposition of humor and melancholy, and was very enjoyable to watch. (Jury)
• A film that's taken animated emotion to a whole new level...http://j.mp/nTmhvE AT THE OPERA | Argentina. #Filminute (MUBI.com)

BUNNY VS. SWEET IRON CAT
Joker_L.K
CHINA

• Bunny vs. the Sweet Iron Cat by Chinese filmmaker Joker_L.K offers a compressed three-act action comedy about two lovebirds whose romance is broken up by a wicked robot feline in 61 seconds flat. Wired.com (http://www.wired.com/underwire/2011/09/one-minute-film-festival/ )
• "When I made this movie ? http://j.mp/r34zoj there were many power outages. So I must emphasize to everyone – constantly press ctrl+s!" (MUBI.com)
• Superb animation and wonderfully original characters

13. CARA O SELLO
Manuel Velαsquez Isaza
COLOMBIA

• One of the most challenging aspects of short films is delivering a complete cohesive story. In one minute, it is possible to display beautiful cinematography and sharp lighting, but it is significantly more difficult to present a narrative that has a beginning, middle and end. In Cara O Sello, the story is told post fact, when all the drama and violence has already taken place. I found this choice in story telling to be fascinating, as it skips what is arguably the most 'exciting' part of the story and instead shows a seemingly simple exchange between two friends. By leaving many aspects of this story to the viewers imagination, Cara O Sello successfully presents just enough information to engage the viewer and make them chuckle at the surprise ending. (Jury)
• "(we) shot the film in 80 minutes, running the whole time because we had to give the camera to another team." — director Manuel Velαzquez #MakeEveryMomentCount ;-) (MUBI.com http://mubi.com/garage/posts/filminute-2011-5-quick-qs-for-director-manuel-velasquez-isaza-for-cara-o-sello )
• The world needs more female villains!

CHIT CHAT
Piet Sonck
BELGIUM

• A common misconception about short films is that visuals dominate dialogue since there's no scope for punchy lines. Piet Sonck from Belgium does not agree and his film breaks this myth. The film is a common conversation between two similar looking young women on an escalator. The film is one minute of thoroughly exceptional dialogue and a smart comment on the popular perception of shock fashion (dyeing hair red, blue, pink etc ) being sexually attractive. (www.mid-day.com Mumbai, India)
• Expertly executed one shot one-minute film. A seemingly offbeat, everyday discussion turns out to be chalk full of meaning and social commentary. I watched it many times (Jury)
• 5 QUICK Q'S FOR DIRECTOR PIET SONCK FOR "CHIT CHAT" on Production Notes http://j.mp/rtvCsh Thx @theauteursG "two young girls 'chitchatting' about coloring their hair while walking to the subway platform… But in fact it's about (miss)communication." (MUBI.com)

DANS L'OMBRE
Fabrice Mathieu
FRANCE

• A lot of story for one-minute. Bravo!
• Trθs bon, une idιe gιniale, la narration et le montage sont magnifiques, un vrai rιgal. Trθs bon film :)
• A big nod to Fritz Lang there perhaps? I wanted to see more!

EVIL WEED
Nick Black
UK

• Evil Weed was clever and I liked the animation a lot.(Jury)
• Mean plant!
• The Dexter of weeds!

FAMILY PORTRAIT
Andrei Staruiala
UK

• Without any edit, this movie in every single detail, from the mother's acting, to the fallen glass on the table made me live the stress of family violence. And this was just one minute of it. (Jury)
• A single scene that is enough to create the fearful and tense atmosphere in a family where the father is abusive. Without showing any violence the director is capable to make us understand that the father hits his wife and daughter and they fear him a lot. (Jury)
• I don't know why but I really liked this. Very dark and creepy, even if nothing is explicit or explained. It creates a uniquely unsettling mood.

FOOLPROOF
Christopher Wadsworth
CANADA

sweet. I like it a lot. Well done. Stunning, sexy cinematography with a chilling end. Left me frustrated that I didn't get to see more of the woman, but happy also that I wasn't the victim. Yikes!

GARBAGE
Danijel Kovacevic/Hrvoje Stipkovic
CROATIA

Petty crime multiplied! A valid comment on corruption in the former Eastern bloc. (Jury) Well shot and well edited. Very strong script.

GRASSY KNOLL EDGE
Yasuyuki Kubota
JAPAN

What to say. So funny! The actors, the setup, the script. Amazing. This is one minute that I would like to see extended to a movie cause these dudes are hilarious. (Jury)

There's a tolerance by one character for the other's strange ideas http://j.mp/pMmZIz but in the end the two are so well-aligned. (MUBI.com)

made me chuckle. tx dudes!

HONFOGLALAS
Kristof Deak
HUNGARY

• The films has an unusual sense of humour and a critical reference to the heroic, nationalistc interpretations of official history. The contradiction between a farmer's daily routine and a car chase by the police in a peaceful countryside path is a metaphor for the historical "conquest" of Hungary. The chased "criminal" aiming an arrow to the police stands for Arpad the conqueror, most probably. The farmer's indifference to the scene and the horizon in the background refers to the eternity of nature, where the conquest has no meaning. (Jury)
• If you thought this was just a film about a walk in the countryside http://j.mp/ptieEV here's the backstory on the widely-feared Hungarian horse archers & the hijacked VW co-opted for the shooting of this film. Thx @theauteursG (MUBI.com)
• Intriguing. Loved the bells at the end.

LEVEL 13
Federico Forcolini
UK

• Level 13 was very well produced and well suited to the format. I liked the story and the look. (Jury)
• my favourite is the minotaur in the parking garage: (blogs.the province.com)
• Underground car parks..."A perfect place for a Minotaur to take refuge from the modern world." — Federico Forcolini, director of LEVEL 13 http://mubi.com/garage/posts/filminute-2011-5-quick-qs-for-director-federico-forcolini-for-level-13 (MUBI.com)
• Super weird and hilarious. I liked it a lot!

MASKS & MIRRORS
George Mangalath Thomas
INDIA

•Beautifully acted, well shot and brilliantly edited (Jury)
•A young boy meets the real world.
•great!!!!!!!!! a lot of emotion in me..........

NAUFRAGO
Javier Meler / Djazia Centelles
SPAIN

• Oftentimes, one watches a feature length film and forgets about it as soon as they walk out of the theatre. As filmmakers, one of our biggest challenges is to create content that resonates with the audience, while a sure shot sign of a failed film is an indifferent response. Naufrago manipulates a classic narrative, that of a castaway waiting to be saved, and tells an alternative story…. I applaud this film for achieving so much in just one minute. (Jury)
• Naufrago (castaway) by Spanish director Javier Meler Gutierrez is another beauty that surprises you with its ending, which you nevertheless half-expect. The stereotype says that a castaway stuck on an uninhabited island would want to be rescued and a bottle of wine that the waves bring ashore would be used to send out an SOS message. But the castaway in the film is Spanish, is a sommelier, who enjoys his bottle of wine and sends out a message appreciating it. You can't help but smile. (www.mid-day.com Mumbai, India)
• Fantastic! Incredible camerawork and uplifting story!

NEVER THOUGHT
Erik Scanlon
USA

• Erik shares some great details about the film ? http://j.mp/npgAX4 "This film is for every working man or woman who does what it takes to support themselves and/or their families, even if they aren't happy at their job." (Filminute Facebook Page)
• Never thought...my life would become this. We ask the the two-part question; what do I want to be when I grow up. to be...not what I do.
• This was brilliant! :)

THE DAYS BEFORE THAT
Steve Baker
AUSTRALIA

• A compellingly narration and score mixed over engaging Super 8 footage draws you in, then through a deft sprinkling of special effects leaves you unsettled. Very inventive! (Jury)
• One of the best, good job.
• Good stuff :-)

THE FALLEN
Bauke Brouwer
SOUTH AFRICA

•The other gem in the collection is The Fallen by Bauke Brouwer from South Africa. The frames are tight, the shots are simple and the emotions true.
•The film, that commemorates the 12,000 South African soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Second World War has a clear beginning, middle and the end. It film doesn't put across just an idea. It tells the story of thousands of families from the beginning to the end, all in a minute, much like a full-length feature film. (www.mid-day.com Mumbai, India)
•Brilliant cinematography and production values. The work that has gone into this one-minute film is truly impressive! Thank you. You made me remember people I hadn't thought about in a long time.
